Outcome
Deep pressure tactile input
Deep pressure may improve regulation or functional participation for some children with sensory processing challenges, but autism specific evidence remains limited and individual responses vary.
Why did we rate it this way?
- A 2025 systematic review of sensory based interventions found strong strength of evidence for deep pressure tactile input across children and youth with sensory processing challenges.
- The review included developmental populations rather than exclusively autistic participants, creating indirectness for an autism specific conclusion.
- Different studies use different forms of deep pressure, duration, equipment, and outcome measures.
- A strategy that feels calming or organizing to one person can be uncomfortable or distressing to another.
- The evidence should not be interpreted as support for every weighted, compression, or deep pressure product sold commercially.
