Occupational therapy, or OT, is a broad health and rehabilitation service focused on helping people participate in meaningful everyday activities. An occupational therapist may work on self care, daily routines, motor skills, environmental adaptations, sensory needs, school participation, play, work, community access, assistive strategies, or caregiver coaching. Ayres Sensory Integration, or ASI, is one specific occupational therapy approach for people whose sensory integration and processing differences interfere with everyday participation. Evidence for ASI should not automatically be assumed to apply to every occupational therapy technique or sensory based intervention.

A 2026 systematic review of 12 higher level studies also found strong evidence for individual goal attainment and occupational performance.
Earlier systematic reviews reached similar conclusions for individualized functional goals.

Minimal or no spoken language

Minimally speaking and nonspeaking autistic people may receive occupational therapy, but communication profile is not consistently reported or analyzed separately in OT effectiveness studies.

Adults

Adults are substantially underrepresented in occupational therapy effectiveness research. Adult literature more often addresses participation, employment, accommodations, sensory experience, and community barriers.

Settings

Occupational therapy can occur in homes, schools, clinics, workplaces, and community environments. Much of the ASI research has been conducted in outpatient or clinical settings, although school based studies also exist.
