Motor and physical activity support includes structured exercise, movement skill instruction, adapted physical education, strength and aerobic exercise, balance and coordination activities, sports, swimming, martial arts, exergaming, and other forms of physical activity. Some autistic people may also receive individualized support from physical therapists or other professionals when specific motor, mobility, strength, balance, pain, or functional concerns are present. The research reviewed here focuses primarily on physical activity and motor interventions rather than treating all forms of physical therapy as one intervention.

They also describe barriers involving sensory environments, inaccessible programs, bullying, communication, motor challenges, lack of knowledgeable support, and pressure to participate in activities that do not suit them. Research involving autistic adults emphasizes that improving access may require changing programs and environments rather than assuming autistic people simply need more motivation.
