Outcome
Short term anxiety in children and adolescents
CBT can reduce anxiety symptoms in autistic children and adolescents, particularly immediately after treatment.
Why did we rate it this way?
- A systematic review and meta analysis included 19 randomized controlled trials involving 833 autistic young people.
- Clinician rated anxiety showed a large treatment effect, while parent rated and child reported effects were smaller but still significant.
- A 2025 systematic review covering 24 studies and 1,140 participants also concluded that CBT can reduce anxiety in autistic youth.
- Results vary depending on who rates anxiety, which creates uncertainty about the size of the benefit.
- Most trials involve autistic young people without intellectual disability and therefore do not represent the entire autism spectrum.
- Reporting bias concerns were identified across many trials.
